My Sissy and I were each others first friends of life, we were neighbors in a small village on Long Island, NY, our parents were close friends and our Dads were coworkers. Ironically we were both adopted also, which made our bond even closer, what are the odds? And although our stories were different, our pain was the same, we both knew abandonment and shame, we were Kindred Spirits.
I had never known life without My Sissy, until January 2023 when she got her wings due to complications of back surgery. I was shocked, stunned and stuck, how was I supposed to live without her? We had so many plans… places to go, things to do. We both had a heart to serve, especially our Sisters, we were always giving back and paying forward. We learned to give not because we had so much, but because we know how it feels to have nothing. We believed in the power of LOVE, it is the highest vibration, only love can conquer hate. We always had our pom-poms out supporting and encouraging each other.
We served diligently in our communities for over 35 years, doing street outreach working with at risk youth, ex offenders, substance abusers, teenage mothers, HIV+ and feeding the homeless, we loved to cook, it was one of our love languages. If we aren’t watering each other, what are we here for? After losing My Sissy so suddenly, life got really dim, I was trying to learn to navigate without her, I still want to call her. One night she visited me in a dream, she told me she doesn't want me sad and depressed, ''Stay in the light Sissy, that’s where I am”. When I awoke I started to alchemize my pain into purpose, out of the darkness, let there be light!!!! “My Sissy’s Keeper” a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization was created in her honor.
A caring safe place for girls and young women to grow and heal given the tools and life skills…’learning to love yourself is the greatest love of all.’ The best tribute to My Sissy is not grief but gratitude, I am thankful to have a lifetime of sisterhood., all the love and laughs. She always said “life is for the living”…so if we are still here, it’s for a reason, we still have work to do, “my people perish for the lack of knowledge”.
My Sissy is the wind beneath my wings now, the marathon continues.
I AM MY SISSY'S KEEPER!!!
Our mission is to educate, empower, encourage and enrich the lives of girls and young women through the arts, holistic healing and self love.
Holistic healing refers to an approach that addresses the well-being of the whole person—body, mind, and spirit. It recognizes the interconnectedness of various aspects of an individual's life and seeks to promote balance and harmony. Our foundation recognizes the significance of holistic healing practices, including alternative therapies, mindfulness techniques, energy work, and traditional healing methods. We strive to support initiatives that promote wellness and healing on multiple levels, empowering individuals to achieve optimal physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
Arts play a crucial role in fostering creativity, self-expression, and cultural enrichment. We recognize the importance of various art forms such as visual arts, performing arts, literature, music, and more. Our foundation aims to support and promote artistic endeavors by providing platforms, resources, and opportunities for artists to thrive. We believe that through the arts, we can inspire, educate, and ignite positive change.
Self-love is a fundamental aspect of personal growth and well-being. It encompasses self-acceptance, self-care, and self-compassion. Our foundation believes that cultivating a healthy sense of self-love is essential for individuals to lead fulfilling and empowered lives. We aim to promote self-love through education, awareness campaigns, and resources that encourage individuals to prioritize their mental and emotional health. By fostering a culture of self-love, we strive to empower individuals to embrace their worth, nurture their authentic selves, and build resilient and compassionate communities.
